Trump Rejects Iran’s Seven-Day Hormuz Offer as Tehran Holds Its Line
President Donald Trump has rejected Iran’s proposed seven-day framework for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, widening a dispute in which both sides say they want an agreement but differ sharply on the price of one.
Tehran’s position is that the route can reopen quickly if Washington accepts a package transmitted through Qatari mediators. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that, if the United States is genuinely committed to a deal, “everything is ready” for the seven-day countdown to begin. The plan links restored shipping to an end to the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports, the release of frozen Iranian assets, relief from oil sanctions and a halt to hostilities across the region, including Lebanon.
Trump, however, publicly called the Iranian terms “unacceptable,” even as he said he wanted an agreement to reopen the waterway. U.S. concerns extend beyond transit through Hormuz to Iran’s nuclear programme. Tehran has indicated it could discuss broader issues, but a senior Iranian official said it would not abandon uranium enrichment or send its highly enriched uranium stockpile abroad, even if Washington accepted the peace proposal.
That contrast defines the current deadlock: Iran frames the proposal as a reciprocal de-escalation arrangement, while the United States appears unwilling to separate maritime access from its broader demands. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his government was open to talks but would not accept “intimidation or coercion.”
The consequences reach beyond the two governments. Hormuz once carried about 20% of global hydrocarbons, and Saudi Arabia has warned that disruption there and at Bab el-Mandeb threatens energy security. Its foreign minister said regional stability was “directly linked to global energy security,” while calling for stronger international action to protect freedom of navigation. With no accepted framework, regular shipping through Hormuz remains without a stated date for recovery.
