The post-summit announcements point to a modest thaw rather than a comprehensive reset. Both sides agreed to more favorable tariff treatment for about $30 billion in non-sensitive goods, a two-month extension of their trade truce, and a bilateral channel for incidents involving artificial intelligence. A post on X also framed Xi’s trip as his first state visit to Washington in more than a decade and the leaders’ second meeting of the year.

Chinese-aligned commentary casts the meeting as the beginning of a more consequential phase. The Global Times argued that Xi’s approach centres on “cooperation as the main axis, moderate competition, manageable differences and commitment to peace,” and said practical steps in trade, AI and people-to-people exchanges could build confidence over time. From that perspective, Washington’s treatment of Chinese companies and its approach to Taiwan will determine whether the political understanding can hold.

Accounts from Brazil’s right describe the same agreements more cautiously. They highlight tariff reductions and China’s commitment to import at least 10 million tonnes of US coal annually in 2027 and 2028, while stressing that negotiations on rare-earth supplies, technology restrictions, agricultural purchases and wider tariffs remain unfinished. The AI channel is presented less as a broad partnership than as a safeguard against an incident triggering a diplomatic or security crisis.

There is agreement that dialogue is preferable to escalation. Trump has portrayed the encounter as highly positive, while Xi has called for a relationship without conflict or confrontation and for AI to remain under human control. Yet the contrast is clear: Beijing-linked commentary sees an opening for stable coexistence, whereas the more deal-focused assessment sees a narrow pause in rivalry—one that still spans trade, advanced technology, military communication and Taiwan.
