France’s secular landscape sees a record baptism surge
France recorded more than 20,000 adult and adolescent baptisms in 2026, a 20% increase on the previous year’s record and the latest stage in a sharp rise in conversions. The growth comes in a country where more than half of adults report no religious affiliation, 29% identify as Catholic and only 8% say they attend church regularly.
Pope Leo XIV framed that contrast as central to the moment. Speaking in Paris on September 26, he said it might seem “paradoxical” that such a development was taking place in a society “marked by a deeply secularized culture.” He described the sustained increase in conversions as a “surprising work of God,” while cautioning that churches must respond with a “wise balance” between receiving people as they are and teaching the demands of Christian life.
Church leaders broadly share the pope’s sense that the figures bring both encouragement and responsibility. Paris Archbishop Laurent Ulrich said the renewed demand for Christian initiation had surprised the church and was seen as “the work of the Lord.” More than 350 representatives from eight dioceses and the military ordinariate are due to address the issue through a provincial assembly, following a consultation that drew 45,000 responses.
The accounts of new Catholics underline the varied reasons behind the trend. Loïs Barbichon, 22, said he came to faith during the Covid-19 pandemic largely through reading, driven by “a kind of interior impulse” to be baptized and learn more. Another convert, Jaoide, said reading both the Quran and New Testament left him struck by Jesus’ example and endurance.
For parishes, the challenge is not simply preparing candidates for baptism. Barbichon said each newly baptized person should be able to find a mission, rather than feel “abandoned by the community.” That concern is likely to shape the assembly’s deliberations as the French church seeks to turn a surge in interest into lasting participation.
