Brazil Braces for Cyclone Storms as Forecasts Differ on Reach and Severity
An extratropical cyclone forming over southern Brazil, together with an advancing cold front, is expected to trigger severe weather across parts of the country. The two reports agree that heavy rain and strong winds are the central threat, though they draw different boundaries around the areas most at risk.
The first account focuses on the official warning issued by the National Institute of Meteorology, or Inmet, for parts of the South, Southeast and Centre-West. It says the agency has issued an orange storm alert — a designation for “danger” and a higher likelihood of damage to people and infrastructure. Rainfall could reach 60 millimetres in an hour and total 100 millimetres in a day, while gusts may reach 100 km/h.
That assessment highlights the practical hazards accompanying the forecast: flooding, fallen trees, power cuts, crop damage and damage from falling structures or branches. Greater São Paulo, Campinas, the Paraíba Valley and São Paulo’s southern coast are among the areas identified, alongside parts of Santa Catarina, Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul.
The second report takes a broader national view. It also attributes intense rain to the cold front and extratropical cyclone, but includes the North as well as the South and Centre-West in its outlook for heavy precipitation. For São Paulo state, it projects lower wind speeds than the Inmet-centred report — gusts of 50 to 60 km/h — while still warning of possible roof damage and falling utility poles or tree branches.
Beyond the storm zone, the wider forecast stresses Brazil’s uneven conditions: high temperatures in parts of the Centre-West and North, including a projected 39°C in Palmas, while the Northeast coast remains sunny and hot and its interior dry. Both accounts nonetheless point to the same immediate concern: fast-changing weather, particularly across the country’s centre-south, as the front advances.
