Fachin Delays Supreme Court Clash Over Aparecida Posts
Supreme Court President Edson Fachin has left off the agenda a full-court discussion of conflicting decisions over social-media posts concerning Our Lady of Aparecida, Brazil’s patron saint. The dispute reached the court after Justice Flávio Dino and Justice André Mendonça issued opposing rulings on content connected to Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.
The right-leaning account casts the episode as a politically charged “fake news” case and stresses the institutional friction behind the postponement. According to its report, Dino overturned part of an order by Mendonça and restored posts that linked Flávio Bolsonaro to the removal of the title of patron saint from the mother of Jesus. The report says that Bolsonaro’s campaign later sought relief from Justice Luiz Fux, who suspended Dino’s action, leaving competing matters for the full court to address.
That account also says justices had considered the possibility of a request for more time to examine the case and were concerned that a scheduled hearing could trigger another confrontation between blocs within the court. Fachin’s decision not to set a date therefore avoids an immediate plenary showdown, but does not resolve the underlying conflict.
The left-leaning source offers a narrower account, describing the development chiefly as Fachin postponing discussion of the publications involving Our Lady of Aparecida. Its framing centers the court’s calendar decision rather than characterizing the case as a wider clash over misinformation or judicial factions.
On social media, commentator Rodrigo Constantino echoed the more critical right-wing interpretation, writing: “So far, ZERO effect from the fake news about Our Lady and the ban on betting.” His post does not add legal detail, but illustrates how the case has been folded into a broader political argument over online speech and court intervention.
