Petrobras Turns to US LNG in 22-Year Supply Push
Petrobras has signed a 22-year agreement to purchase liquefied natural gas from Cheniere Marketing, a subsidiary of US exporter Cheniere Energy. The contract calls for 800,000 tonnes of LNG annually, adding another long-duration supply arrangement to the Brazilian state-controlled company’s portfolio.
The Brazil Left-linked coverage presents the development in simple terms: Petrobras has entered a 22-year contract to buy gas from the United States. That account does not elaborate on pricing, supply strategy or the wider market context.
The Brazil Right-linked report offers a fuller interpretation, casting the agreement as an attempt to reduce dependence on the LNG spot market, where purchases are made for near-term delivery and prices can move sharply with market conditions. Petrobras said the contract “strengthens risk management of the natural-gas portfolio and expands flexibility and security” in meeting its commitments.
Both accounts therefore point to the same underlying decision: a substantial, long-term purchase of US LNG. The difference is emphasis. The shorter report focuses on the bilateral deal itself, while the more detailed account situates it alongside a 20-year agreement announced in late August with Sempra Infrastructure for an additional 800,000 tonnes a year from a Texas liquefaction terminal.
That broader framing links the new Cheniere contract to Brazil’s effort to widen its sources of imported gas as Bolivian production declines. LNG can be shipped by sea rather than delivered through a direct pipeline, giving Petrobras another route to serve power generation, industrial customers and households. The agreements do not eliminate exposure to international gas markets, but they are intended to make supply planning more predictable than relying chiefly on short-term purchases.
