Flydubai emergency landing sparks clash over whether cockpit violence was an attack

Accounts agree that a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv made an emergency landing after violence in the cockpit and a sharp descent. They differ sharply over whether the co-pilot’s alleged actions should be described as a terrorist plot or an internal incident still under investigation.

Flydubai emergency landing sparks clash over whether cockpit violence was an attack
A Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after a violent confrontation in the cockpit and a sudden loss of altitude. Across the accounts, passengers, crew and pilots travelling off duty are credited with helping contain the incident and stabilize the aircraft.

Right-leaning Brazilian coverage characterizes the episode as an attempted terrorist attack. It says the co-pilot stabbed the captain and sought to take control of the aircraft, while passengers entered the cockpit, restrained him and helped prevent a crash. One account says the Boeing 737 fell more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds before it was leveled out, and identifies passenger Yaniv Hayoun as among those who intervened. Hayoun said he found “one pilot on the floor and the other over the controls,” then pulled back on the controls to level the plane.

That framing is reinforced by political reactions reported in the same coverage. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the event a possible jihadist attack, while Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said whoever tried to bring down the aircraft should be held responsible as if they had committed murder. Commentator Rodrigo Constantino went further on X, describing the co-pilot as a terrorist and criticizing news coverage that called the episode a “fight.”

Left-leaning reports describe the same descent and emergency diversion but urge greater caution over intent. One cites a Flydubai spokesperson confirming only that the flight “experienced an incident during the journey,” with all passengers safe after landing. It also says an Israeli official ruled out a hijacking and described an “internal incident involving employees.”

Another report nevertheless relays passenger and official accounts that the co-pilot allegedly tried to stab the captain in an apparent attempt to crash the aircraft. It says other pilots travelling as passengers took over, while a doctor treated the injured crew members. The competing descriptions therefore rest less on the immediate emergency than on an unresolved question: whether the alleged violence had an established political motive or remains an incident under investigation.
