Recordings Raise Fresh Questions Over Vorcaro’s Alleged Offshore Wealth
Recordings obtained by Piauí and attributed to Fabiano Zettel, brother-in-law of former Banco Master controller Daniel Vorcaro, have produced a shared allegation but sharply different editorial emphases: an unverified claim of R$20 billion held abroad, and questions about the network around the bank’s collapse.
The Brazil Left account presents the recordings as a detailed picture of Zettel’s anxiety over asset freezes, payments and his relationship with Vorcaro. It reports that Zettel said he had moved some of his own money abroad before Banco Master’s liquidation, fearing his accounts could be blocked. In a later exchange, he allegedly said Vorcaro “kept 20 billion abroad” but could not access it without risking another arrest.
That report also draws a clear distinction between the allegation and established fact. It says the material published by Piauí does not show authorities officially confirming either the existence or location of the full R$20 billion. It adds that roughly R$2 billion in property and other assets linked to Vorcaro had reportedly been located at that point for potential creditor compensation.
The Brazil Right account centers instead on Zettel’s alleged description of Alexandre de Moraes, a justice on Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court. In the recordings, Zettel reportedly said: “Xandão is Daniel’s best friend. I’m counting on him. Best friend — they have dinners together, go out together.” The report notes that the conversations did not explain what Zettel meant by “counting on him,” and that the justice’s office did not issue a statement. Vorcaro’s lawyer said he would not comment, while Zettel’s lawyer did not respond, according to the report.
Commenting on the report, columnist Rodrigo Constantino questioned the apparent scale of the alleged funds, writing: “Where did so much money come from?!? Master, formerly Máxima, was a small bank…” His post echoes the unresolved issue in both accounts: the recordings are significant claims, not official proof of the alleged offshore total.
