Brazil’s electoral court orders Nikolas Ferreira to remove Lula video
Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) ordered federal congressman Nikolas Ferreira to remove within 24 hours a video that linked President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s remarks about intimate medical examinations to crimes against children. The preliminary ruling also bars Ferreira from republishing similar material; he may appeal.
For Lula’s campaign and the court, the central issue is context. The disputed remarks came during a discussion of prostate-cancer prevention, medical examinations and men’s resistance to preventive care, Judge Estela Aranha wrote. She said Lula’s reference to women was intended as a comparison of differing experiences of medical monitoring and preventive care.
Aranha concluded that Ferreira’s video went beyond political criticism. In her view, it introduced “an entirely different connotation” from Lula’s original speech, shifting a public-health discussion toward alleged criminal conduct involving children and adolescents. Lula’s campaign had argued that the posts amounted to electoral misinformation, harmed his image and constituted improper negative campaigning.
Ferreira’s video took the opposite reading. He said girls are not subjected to such touching from an early age and argued that Lula’s phrasing could be dangerously interpreted; the video suggested Lula was encouraging sexual violence against young people. Ferreira described the legal action as an inversion of values after he denounced what he called an unacceptable statement by the president.
The clash spread quickly online. Commentator Rodrigo Constantino wrote that the only response to someone who believed he could touch girls’ intimate areas was the one directed at Lula, echoing the critical interpretation of the remarks. In a later post, Constantino praised Ferreira as “gigantic” after Lula called the congressman a “scoundrel.”
The ruling does not settle the wider political dispute over Lula’s language. It does, however, draw a legal distinction between criticism of the wording and portraying the health-related remarks as an endorsement of criminal acts.
