Brazil’s electoral court blocks Globo’s empty podium for Lula
Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has ordered TV Globo not to show the empty podium reserved for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, nor permit other candidates to address questions to him, during a debate Lula decided not to attend.
The ruling by TSE minister Estela Aranha followed a request from Lula’s coalition. Lula instead planned an interview with Flow during the debate. Globo’s rules had provided for the absent candidate’s seat to remain visible with their name displayed, and for rivals to direct questions to that candidate.
Aranha’s reasoning, as presented by the outlet associated with the left perspective, was that the arrangement appeared to go beyond event organization and could “create a situation of imbalance among participants.” She held that candidates’ agreement to a debate format does not compel attendance, because participation remains optional under electoral law. The decision also said rules cannot become coercive in a way that restricts a candidate’s political rights.
The outlet associated with the right perspective described the order as censorship and stressed a contrasting precedent from 2006, when Lula skipped a debate while seeking re-election. It reported that Globo then kept his chair empty and allowed the other candidates to put unanswered questions to him. That account also emphasized Aranha’s previous work in the Lula administration before her appointment to the electoral court.
The disagreement extends to social media. Commentator Rodrigo Constantino said Aranha had required Globo not to show the empty podium and questioned her professional background. In a separate post, he argued that the decision benefited Lula, an allegation not established in the court’s stated rationale.
Both accounts agree on the immediate effect: viewers will not see an empty place for Lula and participating candidates will not be able to address him. They differ over whether that restriction preserves fairness for an absent candidate or curbs the broadcaster’s debate format.
