Flydubai cockpit attack prompts competing terrorism and Iran claims
Accounts from the flight agree on the central event: a Flydubai co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain on a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv service, after which passengers and crew intervened and the aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The Brazil Right account presents the episode as an attempted terrorist attack. It says the captain, identified as Smit Machchhar, was stabbed but managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing others to restrain the co-pilot. The report says the aircraft lost more than 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before a passenger, Yaniv Hayoun, briefly took the controls and helped level it out. A reposted account attributed to Hayoun said: “I pulled the yoke up and stopped the plane’s descent,” adding that his limited aviation knowledge came from watching Air Crash Investigation.
That account also says the suspect, described as an Omani national, was tied up with headphone cords and held until Saudi authorities took custody. It says Israel’s government viewed the case as an attempted jihadist attack, though it acknowledges the precise motive remained under investigation.
The Brazil Left report places greater emphasis on the unresolved investigation and the geopolitical response. It says the United Arab Emirates opened an inquiry into whether terrorism was involved, while Saudi Arabia said preliminary findings indicated that the co-pilot attacked the commander and that the suspect was transferred to the UAE with an Emirati security team.
It also highlights President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Tehran could be involved. “We are working on that right now,” Trump said when asked about Iran; he added that, if responsibility were established, Iran would be “hit very hard.” The accounts therefore converge on the alleged assault and the passengers’ intervention, but diverge on how far its motive—and any wider state connection—can yet be established.
