Datafolha puts Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro in a margin-of-error contest
A Datafolha survey released on the eve of Brazil’s 2026 first-round vote depicts an unusually tight presidential race between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro. Coverage associated with the left foregrounded the simulated runoff result: Lula at 47% and Bolsonaro at 46%.
Right-leaning coverage likewise reported Lula’s lead, but emphasized that neither headline figure establishes a clear advantage. In the stimulated first-round measure of valid votes, Lula received 45% to Bolsonaro’s 42%; the outlet described the pair as “technically tied.” The distinction matters because the first-round calculation excludes blank, null and undecided responses, while the runoff simulation uses total votes.
The same report put the runoff at 47% for Lula and 46% for Bolsonaro, with 6% blank or null and 2% undecided. Datafolha interviewed 4,006 people on October 3, reported a two-percentage-point margin of error and said the poll had a 95% confidence level.
The shared reading is therefore less about a decisive Lula lead than about a contest that remains open within the survey’s statistical range. The right-leaning report also cautioned readers against treating voting-intention polls as forecasts, noting that methodology, sample composition and question wording can affect results.
Rodrigo Constantino, posting on X, argued that Datafolha’s eve-of-election leader has historically gone on to win the first round in each of the previous six contests, while also noting that polling error for the leader was generally within or near the margin of error. That historical argument points toward the importance of Lula’s nominal lead; the poll’s narrow spreads, however, are the stronger immediate message in both sets of coverage.
