Petrobras hits R$700bn as Equatorial Margin discovery lifts expectations
Petrobras closed Friday with a market value of R$700.08 billion, crossing the R$700 billion threshold for the first time after its shares rose alongside a broader rally in Brazilian equities. Preferred shares gained 2.81% and common shares 3.25%, while the Ibovespa climbed 2.63%.

The immediate market story was not solely about the company. The report links the wider upswing to U.S. labour-market data and reduced expectations of further U.S. interest-rate increases. But Petrobras also drew particular attention after announcing a new oil-bearing interval in the Morpho well, in the FZA-M-59 block of the Foz do Amazonas Basin, off Amapá.

For investors, the discovery added to expectations around the Equatorial Margin’s exploratory potential. Petrobras said the finding was identified through electrical logs, rock indications and fluid samples, with laboratory analysis still under way. The well lies about 175 kilometres from Oiapoque and nearly 500 kilometres from the mouth of the Amazon River; hydrocarbons there were first reported in August.

Management’s emphasis, however, is broader than the share-price milestone. Petrobras frames exploration in new frontier areas as part of a strategy to replenish reserves and help supply Brazilian energy demand. The company’s president, Magda Chambriard, said two oil-bearing layers had been identified at different depths and that drilling was expected to finish by the end of October. “We are increasing the value of these exploratory areas for Petrobras. Amapá is becoming more valuable every day,” she said.

The record valuation therefore combines a favourable trading session with a longer-term bet: that further appraisal of the Equatorial Margin can turn an early discovery into commercially meaningful reserves.
