A Push to Name Guarulhos Airport for Lito Sousa Faces a Legislative Question
The campaign to rename São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport after aviation educator Lito Sousa has drawn support from admirers who say the tribute would recognize both his public work and his professional ties to the airport. But the reports describe different routes through Brazil’s legislative system, leaving the formal path to a possible change unclear.
One account says fans submitted a Senate “legislative idea” proposing the name São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport – Joselito Geraldo de Sousa. It says the proposal had received more than 3,500 endorsements and would need 20,000 within four months to be considered by the Senate’s human-rights and participatory-legislation committee. Supporters argue that Sousa, who worked for Varig, Transbrasil and United Airlines, “built much of his career at this airport.”
That account also emphasizes his work through the Aviões e Músicas channel, saying he brought technical information and a culture of flight safety to a broad audience, including passengers anxious about flying. A condolence message reposted by Allan dos Santos similarly described Sousa as someone who took aviation “to millions,” explaining it with “simplicity.”
A separate report describes the prospective renaming as a proposal presented by federal lawmaker Duda Salabert, saying it would need to move through the Chamber of Deputies before any official change. It focuses less on the petition’s support count and more on the broad institutional recognition of Sousa’s work: Brazil’s aviation regulator, ANAC, said he helped clarify aircraft, operational safety and the air-transport sector for the public. “Brazilian aviation loses one of its great communicators,” the agency said.
Both accounts place the proposal in the context of Sousa’s death at 59 after a diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The shared case for honoring him rests on his aviation career and educational reach; the unresolved difference is which legislative initiative, if either, could ultimately rename the airport.
