Brazil Braces for Heavy Rain as Forecasts Differ on Where Risks Will Peak

Weather forecasts agree that cold fronts and abundant moisture could bring severe storms across broad areas of Brazil. They differ chiefly over the areas facing the most acute flooding and landslide risk as rainfall totals may exceed 200 mm.

Brazil Braces for Heavy Rain as Forecasts Differ on Where Risks Will Peak
Forecasts from across Brazil’s political media spectrum agree on the central warning: heavy rain, thunderstorms and hail are likely to affect large parts of the country this week, with some areas potentially receiving more than 200 millimetres.

The Brazil Left account places its emphasis on the broad reach of the unsettled weather before identifying the South as the area of mounting concern. It says rain will affect all five regions, driven by a cold front and high atmospheric moisture, with the heaviest weekly totals expected in northern Rio Grande do Sul, west-central Santa Catarina, central and western Paraná, and Mato Grosso do Sul. In those areas, accumulations could range from 100 to 230 mm by Friday. “The greatest risks of intense rain should progressively become concentrated in the southern states,” it says.

That assessment also describes a shifting pattern: instability initially spreads through the South, Southeast and Center-West, while a new system developing between Argentina, Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul later reinforces the potential for severe storms in the South. Northern and northeastern areas may still see showers, but generally face lower storm risk.

The Brazil Right report broadly shares the forecast of rain above 200 mm and severe weather in the South, Southeast and Center-West. Its focus, however, is more immediate and impact-driven, highlighting “the risk of storms, flooding, river overflow and landslides” after several days of unstable conditions.

It singles out Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul and Mato Grosso do Sul, arguing that persistent rain between Rio and southern Minas raises particular concern for flooding and slope failures. It also flags lightning, wind gusts and possible hail, while noting that Rio could approach 150 mm between Monday and Wednesday.

The two accounts therefore converge on the likelihood of disruptive rainfall and localized totals above 200 mm. Their difference is one of emphasis: the first projects the most sustained severe-weather threat toward the South later in the week, while the second gives greater weight to accumulated rainfall and associated hazards in the Southeast.
