Flávio Bolsonaro leads Lula into Brazil’s October runoff
Flávio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will contest Brazil’s presidential runoff on October 25 after neither candidate cleared the threshold for a first-round victory. The two accounts agree on the central result: Bolsonaro led Lula, but the contest remained close enough to require a second vote.
The Brazil Right account, reporting with 98.72% of ballots counted, put Bolsonaro at 47.24% and Lula at 44.91%. It described the race as a tight contest and noted that voting in the runoff is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brasília time. Augusto Cury of Avante was listed third with 2.90%, or 3.42 million votes.
The Brazil Left report presented a slightly different tally — 47.03% for Bolsonaro and 45.16% for Lula — while offering a more detailed regional reading of the result. The differing percentages appear to reflect reporting at different stages of the count, rather than a disagreement over who advanced.
Its account depicts a country split across regions. Bolsonaro finished first in 14 states and the Federal District, including all three southern states, the Center-West and major southeastern states. His strongest result was in Roraima, where he received 71.06% to Lula’s 22.86%.
Lula, meanwhile, led in all nine northeastern states and in Amapá, Amazonas and Pará. His highest share came in Piauí, at 70.99%, compared with Bolsonaro’s 24.09%. The regional contrast gives both campaigns a clear electoral map heading into the October vote: Bolsonaro starts with a national edge, while Lula retains concentrated support in the Northeast and parts of the North.
