Augusto Cury says he will stay silent rather than endorse Lula or Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s presidential runoff. While he frames the move as independence from polarisation, commentator Rodrigo Constantino denounced it as cowardice.

Cury Rejects Both Runoff Camps, Drawing a Sharp Rebuke
Augusto Cury, who finished the first round with 2.93% of the vote, says he will not back either Lula or Flávio Bolsonaro in the October 25 presidential runoff. His position leaves both campaigns without the formal support of the third-place candidate, while also exposing a divide over whether neutrality is a principled choice or an abdication of political responsibility.

Cury’s stated approach is to withdraw from the contest altogether. “I completely remain silent regarding those who will be in the second round,” he said, adding that neither campaign may use his name or that of his running mate, Júlio Delgado, as evidence of support. He said voters who backed him remain free to make their own choices.

The former candidate did leave open a narrower form of influence: both finalists, he said, may draw on proposals from his campaign. “If they want to make use of our proposals, they are available to be used,” Cury said. But he also argued that neither rival had presented consistent proposals and renewed his criticism of Brazil’s political polarisation.

His comments point beyond the runoff. Cury said he intends to resume international projects and will “probably” not seek office again. He also rejected the prospect of joining either eventual administration, saying: “I don’t want to be a minister in any government.”

That detached stance was not universally welcomed. Rodrigo Constantino, responding to the announcement on X, called Cury “Coward!” The contrast is stark: Cury portrays silence as independence from both camps, while his critic treats the same decision as an unwillingness to choose in a decisive election.
