A Rare Forest Bird Returns to Camera After 13 Years
Researchers have filmed the Ganges cuckoo-shrike for what is believed to be the first time, ending 13 years without a confirmed scientific record of the elusive bird. Stephanie Bartlett and Paulo Ditzel recorded the species in June 2026 during a six-month expedition in Côte d’Ivoire’s Taï National Park, after spotting movement high in the forest canopy. The Search for Lost Birds initiative described the find as the first confirmed record since 2013 and likely the bird’s first video.
For the researchers, the footage is not simply a striking wildlife encounter. The bird, now known scientifically as Lobotos lobatus and also called the Western wattled cuckooshrike, has been difficult to study because it spends much of its time among foliage dozens of metres above the ground. Its orange-yellow plumage and dark head were visible only briefly before it vanished back into the trees.
The reports draw an important distinction between a “lost” species and an extinct one. In conservation terms, the label applies to species that have gone at least a decade without a documented photograph, video or audio record. The cuckoo-shrike’s return therefore provides evidence that it persists, but not a measure of how secure its population may be.
That difference shapes the conservation reading of the discovery. The species is listed as vulnerable and is thought to be declining as logging and agricultural expansion, including cocoa cultivation, fragment the forests it relies on. The new record identifies Taï as a crucial refuge: one of the largest surviving stretches of primary forest in West Africa. Yet the park still faces illegal logging, artisanal mining and hunting pressures.
Both accounts present the footage as a scientific breakthrough, but neither treats it as a resolution. Instead, they frame the encounter as a starting point for further monitoring—helping determine where the bird survives, how it uses the forest canopy and what protection is needed to keep its reappearance from becoming another long silence.
