PSOL/Rede’s 185-Vote Shortfall Sparks Dispute Over What It Loses
PSOL/Rede’s federation exceeded the national benchmark for Brazil’s 2026 barrier clause but, according to reports from across the political spectrum, failed the required state-by-state test by a narrow margin in Espírito Santo.
The federation received 31,839 votes there, or 1.49% of valid votes for the Chamber of Deputies. It needed 1.5% in a ninth state after reaching that mark in eight, putting it 185 votes below the reported threshold of 32,024. Both accounts identify Ceará, the Federal District, Minas Gerais, Pará, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo as the eight places where the federation cleared the state minimum.
The disagreement is less about the count than about its consequences. One account says the failure would jeopardize access from 2027 to the Party Fund and free radio and television broadcasting time, while stressing that the Electoral Fund — money specifically used for campaigns — is governed by separate rules and is not automatically blocked by the clause. It also notes that elected lawmakers do not automatically lose their mandates.
Right-leaning coverage similarly says the federation is, for now, without Party Fund access and free broadcast time, but one report says it would also lose the Electoral Fund. Another frames the case alongside other parties that failed the clause and notes that PSOL/Rede elected 15 federal deputies, yet in only six states — short of the alternative route requiring 13 deputies spread across nine states.
All accounts leave room for a change in the outcome. Court decisions invalidating other candidates’ votes could reduce the pool of valid votes in Espírito Santo and raise PSOL/Rede’s percentage, though any such revision depends on electoral litigation.
