Union Brasil and PP rally behind Flávio Bolsonaro after a neutral first round

União Brasil and PP have formally backed Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s presidential runoff against Lula, ending their first-round neutrality. Coverage differs mainly in whether the move is framed as a broader anti-PT coalition or a unanimous national party decision.

União Brasil and Progressistas (PP), which make up the União Progressista federation, said they will support senator Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s presidential runoff against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The decision, taken at a meeting of the parties’ leaders, reverses the federation’s national neutrality in the first round.

The two accounts agree on the central development: the federation has moved into Bolsonaro’s camp after he finished ahead of Lula in the first round. The left-leaning report places the announcement within a growing sequence of endorsements, noting that former Goiás governor Ronaldo Caiado backed Bolsonaro despite his PSD party choosing neutrality, while Novo’s defeated candidate Romeu Zema also declared support.

It also presents the federation’s rationale in policy terms. In a statement signed by União Brasil president Antonio Rueda and PP president Ciro Nogueira, the parties said Brazil’s changed challenges require an economy driven by “technology, speed and deregulation.”

The right-leaning account, by contrast, emphasizes the internal character of the decision. It says the endorsement was approved “by acclamation” in Brasília and quotes Senator Tereza Cristina describing it as a unanimous decision by the federation and PP to support Bolsonaro in the runoff. That framing casts the announcement less as an accumulation of individual defections and more as a coordinated national commitment by parties that had allowed state-level leaders to choose their own alliances during the first round.

Online reaction from Bolsonaro supporters was celebratory. Commentator Rodrigo Constantino shared the news of PP and União’s decision with a brief farewell directed at Lula, reflecting the partisan tone surrounding the endorsement.

The runoff is scheduled for October 25, with the federation’s shift adding two significant center-right parties to Bolsonaro’s formal coalition against Lula.
