Ciro Gomes vows court challenge after Ceará defeat, while rivals cite electoral rulings
Two days after losing Ceará’s gubernatorial election, Ciro Gomes said he would not accept Elmano de Freitas’ victory and would take his objections to the courts. Gomes received 46.22% of valid votes, compared with Elmano’s 53.19%, a gap of 376,682 votes.
Gomes’ central argument is that a ruling by Supreme Federal Court Justice Dias Toffoli allowed roughly 900 additional Elmano campaign advertisements to air on the Friday and Saturday before the vote. He said the decision breached rules restricting advertising in the final two days of a campaign, and argued that the late broadcasts materially affected the contest. “For the first time in my life, [I feel] that we were robbed,” Gomes said, adding that his campaign would file a formal complaint despite his lack of confidence in the judiciary.
The account from the left likewise reports Gomes’ intention to challenge the result, but frames his allegations as unsupported. It says the extra advertising time stemmed from an electoral dispute over the “Cironaro” advertisement, which associated Gomes with Jair Bolsonaro. Ceará’s electoral court had found that ad created a false equivalence; a subsequent decision granted Elmano compensatory airtime after broadcasts previously withheld from his campaign.
The two accounts therefore agree on the immediate trigger for Gomes’ complaint: additional Elmano advertising near election day. They diverge over its meaning. Gomes describes the ruling as a decisive and improper intervention, asking how many voters shifted because of an “unprecedented barrage” of ads. The opposing account presents it as a remedy arising from an established campaign-advertising ruling, while noting no evidence offered that it changed the outcome.
