Record Luján pilgrimage turns rain-soaked walk into a call for unity
An estimated 2.7 million people joined Argentina’s 52nd Youth Pilgrimage to Luján, walking more than 60 kilometres from the San Cayetano Sanctuary in Buenos Aires’ Liniers area to the national shrine despite persistent rain. Provincial security figures described the turnout as a record, while the scale of the crowd made the final approach to the basilica especially difficult for many walkers.
The pilgrimage combined physical strain with public expressions of devotion. Pilgrims wore purchased or improvised rain gear, prayed and sang along the route, and relied on parish and volunteer support stations for refreshments, assistance and encouragement. By Saturday evening, some people reportedly needed more than an hour to cover the last few blocks to the basilica as streets filled with arrivals.
For individual participants, the walk was framed chiefly as a spiritual encounter. One pilgrim, Marcos, said he valued it not as an obligation but because it enabled “a deeper connection with the Virgin, with God, with oneself and even with one’s own family.” Volunteers offering free hugs presented their work as practical and emotional support for those struggling through the final kilometres.
Buenos Aires Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva gave the gathering a broader social meaning. He argued that the shared exhaustion of the route cut across status and political difference: “There are no ideological divisions or exclusions in the pilgrimage.” He called on Argentines to respond to what he described as wounds of contempt, intolerance and verbal and physical violence with forgiveness, solidarity and renewed connection.
A second account similarly portrayed the event as a “school of fraternity” ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s planned November 8 visit, emphasizing the Church’s hope that the mass mobilization could help foster peace and dialogue. Both accounts cast the rain and congestion not as setbacks that defined the weekend, but as conditions that underscored the pilgrims’ collective resolve.
