Cruzeiro’s top-four surge leaves São Paulo searching for answers
Cruzeiro turned a home victory into a significant shift in the Brasileirão race, beating São Paulo 2-0 at Mineirão to reach fourth place on 48 points, ahead of Fluminense and Bahia. Kaio Jorge scored before halftime and Zé Lucas added the second after the break, while São Paulo remained on 36 points in 11th.
For Cruzeiro coach Artur Jorge, the result reflected more than clinical finishing. He called it a “fair victory for what we did over the 90 minutes,” describing a high-intensity match in which his side created chances while conceding some of its own. Yet his assessment was tempered by the demands ahead: “We know we will have difficult matches. It will be a hard task.” His focus is on converting strong displays into enough results to secure a Libertadores place.
São Paulo forward Calleri offered a sharply different reading. He pointed to a depleted squad, saying, “We have many absences. We are feeling it,” and acknowledged that the team performed below its usual training standard: “We were below what we train.” He nevertheless said São Paulo had started well, suggesting the defeat was not simply a lack of intent but an inability to sustain its plan.
The travelling supporters were less patient. After a second successive league defeat, they protested from the Mineirão stands, demanding greater respect for the club’s shirt and directing their anger at the players. The contrast is stark: Cruzeiro see momentum but warn against complacency; São Paulo confront a widening gap between preparation, execution and supporter expectations.
