Novo formally endorsed Senator Flávio Bolsonaro for president in Brazil’s second-round election, adding another party to a coalition forming around the PL candidate after the first-round vote.

The party’s rationale is described differently across the two accounts. One report says Novo cast its decision as a choice against both the PT and the Supreme Federal Court, declaring that it would not “remain silent” and would support Bolsonaro for president. It also notes that former Novo candidate Romeu Zema had already declared: “I vote against the PT. I vote for Flávio Bolsonaro.”

A second account places greater emphasis on Novo’s governing and electoral argument. Eduardo Ribeiro, the party’s national president, said the endorsement was intended to ensure “we defeat the PT and put Brazil back on the track of development.” He argued that the legislative results had delivered “an exceptional result for the Brazilian right,” citing Novo’s expanded congressional delegation and the PL’s large caucuses in both chambers.

Both accounts portray the endorsement as part of a wider realignment rather than an isolated declaration. União Brasil and the PP also backed Bolsonaro, while the PSD was reported to be neutral and Republicanos had not yet settled its position. The first report additionally cited support from Goiás’s former governor Ronaldo Caiado despite the PSD’s neutral stance.

Online reaction from commentator Rodrigo Constantino was celebratory but brief: “Tchau, ‘querido’!” His post shared the news that PP and União Brasil had chosen Bolsonaro over Lula in the runoff.

The reports agree that Bolsonaro led Lula in the first round; they differ chiefly in emphasis. One foregrounds Novo’s confrontation with the PT and the court, while the other depicts the decision as evidence of a broader right-wing mandate and a route to economic development.
