Pope Leo XIV urges bishops to pair marriage ideals with mercy for struggling families
Pope Leo XIV has opened a closed-door Vatican assembly on family life with an appeal for bishops to confront hardship without losing sight of the Church’s teaching on marriage. The meeting, running from October 7 to 14, brings together bishops, clergy, lay people and families to assess the reception of Pope Francis’ 2016 exhortation Amoris Laetitia.
Leo’s emphasis is on listening before prescribing. He said families’ experience raises questions that must be met “with courage,” including loneliness, economic insecurity, migration, violence and emotional fragility. He also identified a widening gap between Christian teaching on marriage and contemporary experiences of sexuality and intimacy, while noting that many young people still seek “love, fidelity and belonging” but struggle to imagine a lifelong commitment.
That pastoral focus is shared by Sister Helen Alford, who told the gathering that Amoris Laetitia remains consistent with earlier Church teaching. Her argument rests on the “law of gradualness”: not a relaxation of moral standards, but recognition that people may move toward the good in stages, aided by grace. “The law is in itself a gift of God which points the way,” she said, even when people cannot yet fully meet its objective demands.
The practical tension is most visible in the question of divorced and civilly remarried Catholics. The exhortation prompted debate because it allowed, in particular cases and after pastoral discernment, access to reconciliation and Communion; in 2023, the Vatican confirmed that interpretation as part of the authentic magisterium. Supporters describe this as individual discernment rather than a general permission.
The assembly is not expected to issue doctrinal changes. Its final synthesis will instead be presented to the pope, with participants asked to preserve confidentiality as they seek a shared assessment of family ministry over the past decade.
