Roseana Sarney’s Senate Loss Ends a 72-Year Family Electoral Run
Roseana Sarney’s unsuccessful bid for one of Maranhão’s two Senate seats will leave the Sarney family without an elected officeholder for the first time in 72 years, according to accounts of the 2026 result. The outcome ends a run that began when José Sarney entered electoral politics in 1954 and later extended from Maranhão’s state government to the presidency and the Senate.
Roseana, an MDB politician who had previously served as Maranhão governor, senator and federal deputy, finished third in the Senate race with 1,171,634 votes, or 16.41%, one account said. André Fufuca of PP won 21.43%, while Lahesio Bonfim of Novo received 20.61%, taking the state’s two available seats. A second account similarly put Roseana’s share at 16.37%, describing her as the only family member to contest the 2026 election.
The two accounts frame the result primarily as the end of a family political cycle rather than simply a single-candidate loss. They trace José Sarney’s career through federal and state office, the presidency after Tancredo Neves’s death in 1985, and a later return to the Senate, where he served until 2015.
They also emphasize that the family’s presence was broader than José Sarney’s career. His son José Sarney Filho, known as Zequinha, served multiple terms as a federal deputy and led the Environment Ministry under Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Michel Temer. His grandson Adriano Sarney served as a Maranhão state deputy between 2014 and 2022.
From January 2027, when Roseana’s current federal-deputy term ends, neither account identifies a Sarney family member holding an elected mandate. The result therefore marks a break from a political lineage that remained visible in Maranhão and Brasília for three generations.
