Flávio Bolsonaro’s Lead Leaves Lula Betting on a Turnaround
Datafolha’s first poll of Brazil’s 2026 presidential runoff puts Flávio Bolsonaro of the PL ahead of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the PT by 52% to 48% among valid votes. In total voting intentions, the survey records 49% for Bolsonaro, 45% for Lula, 5% blank or null and 1% undecided.
The competing interpretations turn largely on what that four-point gap means. Reporting aligned with the left notes that the survey’s two-point margin of error places the candidates at the boundary of a technical tie, even as Bolsonaro holds the numerical advantage. It also shows relatively high rejection figures for both: 46% said they would not vote for Lula, compared with 43% for Bolsonaro.
Lula has publicly declined to treat the poll as a verdict. “I don’t evaluate polls. I don’t work that way,” he said, arguing that he has 17 days before the October 25 vote to build support. “The only way you win an election is by winning votes. I am convinced that I will win the election.” His position contrasts with Bolsonaro-aligned voices highlighting further evidence of momentum: commentator Paulo Figueiredo cited a GERP national runoff poll showing Bolsonaro at 53% and Lula at 47%, while stressing the institute’s first-round record.
Right-leaning coverage likewise emphasizes caution rather than certainty. It describes election surveys as a snapshot based on representative samples, not a forecast, and notes that interview methods, sample composition and question wording can affect results.
The poll surveyed 2,520 voters on October 6 and 7, with a 95% confidence level. Bolsonaro also led the first round, taking 47.03% of valid votes to Lula’s 45.16%—a narrower 1.87-point difference that leaves both campaigns focused on the remaining voters.
