TSE Seeks Police Probe as Online Attacks Put Election Staff at Risk
A report from Brazil’s right described Justice Nunes Marques as calling on the Federal Police to investigate threats against Electoral Justice employees, presenting the referral as a direct institutional response to pressure on election staff.
A report from Brazil’s left likewise said the Superior Electoral Court, or TSE, had asked the Federal Police to open an investigation, but offered a fuller account of the alleged campaign. It said the court had recorded about 30,000 online posts involving misinformation, improper disclosure of personal information, hateful content and veiled threats aimed at Electoral Justice workers.
The two accounts therefore converge on the central action: federal investigators were called in over threats directed at people working in Brazil’s election system. They differ chiefly in emphasis. The right-leaning report focused on the official who requested the inquiry, while the left-leaning account focused on the reported volume and forms of online abuse, as well as the court’s wider response.
According to the latter report, the TSE also notified X and Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, about the spread of the posts. It said affected staff and their families were given security support and psychological assistance.
The court said that “unfounded attacks, of any nature, against the electronic voting system and threats against federal public servants constitute crimes” under Brazil’s Penal Code and other criminal legislation. The statement links protection of employees to the broader defense of the country’s electronic voting system, while stopping short of identifying those responsible for the alleged posts.
At the time of the reports, the key next step was the Federal Police investigation: whether it can identify conduct that meets the threshold for criminal charges and determine who was behind the threats.
