Reports from Brazil’s right- and left-leaning media converge on the central allegation: U.S. authorities have accused Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, of torture in addition to criminal cases they already face. The difference lies less in the substance of the allegations than in their procedural framing.

The left-leaning account says the United States “presented new torture charges” against Maduro and Flores on Thursday, describing them as additions to the case that followed the couple’s detention and transfer to New York. It places the allegations alongside accusations of drug trafficking and arms trafficking, but offers few details on the alleged acts or the status of a court filing.

The right-leaning report is more categorical, saying a U.S. prosecutor’s filing submitted on October 8 accused the pair of “repression and torture” involving three U.S. citizens held in Venezuela. It says prosecutors alleged violence, threats against detainees’ relatives and methods including electric shocks, while portraying the conduct as part of a broader strategy against political opponents, military personnel and other detainees.

That account also stresses that the claims remain allegations subject to judicial review, not a conviction. It says the filing expanded the case against Flores to include conspiracy to commit narcoterrorism—an accusation previously directed at Maduro alone—and alleges that the two conspired to distribute cocaine to finance groups designated as terrorist organizations.

Both reports therefore depict a widening U.S. case against the couple. But while the left-leaning outlet presents a brief update centered on newly announced accusations, the right-leaning outlet treats the development as a detailed formal prosecutorial action, while underscoring that the allegations have yet to be tested in court.
