UFPE Fire Spurs Rebuild Pledge as Investigators Seek Answers
The fire that tore through a University of Pernambuco (UFPE) building on January 7 has become both an immediate research crisis and a test of how quickly public authorities can respond. It was the third fire at the university in eight days; no injuries were reported, but laboratories, equipment and research samples were damaged or destroyed.
Accounts emphasizing the scale of the loss point to work that cannot simply be replaced. The building housed laboratories serving health and computing research, as well as the Suely Galdino Therapeutic Innovation Research Center. Rector Alfredo Gomes estimated losses at about 100 million reais, affecting data and materials connected to roughly 80 dissertations and theses, including research accumulated over two decades. In a separate assessment, Gomes said, “We lost a considerable quantity of equipment and samples linked to dissertations and theses.”
Those reports also stress that the cause remains unresolved. Federal Police are to investigate the January 7 blaze, while university and fire-service officials had not identified its origin. The two earlier incidents had preliminary explanations—a possible accident involving a high-temperature furnace in the physics department and an apparent air-conditioning failure in a plant cytogenetics laboratory—but those explanations did not settle the cause of the latest fire.
Officials backing the recovery effort have focused on reconstruction alongside the inquiry. Education Minister Leonardo Barchini said a new, 7,000-square-meter laboratory building would be constructed after the investigation, with the project estimated at 28 million reais and an initial broader recovery investment of about 100 million reais. He said affected students would retain scholarships and receive routes to complete their work: “These students will not be harmed. They will keep their scholarships and will be able to finish their research.”
The federal response also includes closer legal and forensic oversight. The Federal Police has used robots and drones to document the restricted site, while specialists are expected to help determine both the fire’s origin and the events preceding it. Attorney General Jorge Messias called for a “rigorous investigation” and ordered a federal legal commission to monitor the case and take action if necessary.
