Holiday Storm Threat Puts Southern Brazil on Alert
Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology, Inmet, has issued danger-level storm warnings for parts of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso do Sul during the October 11–12 holiday period. The agency’s central message is one of immediate caution: intense rain, strong winds and hail could disrupt electricity supplies, bring down trees and cause flooding.
The two alerts divide the risk by timing and geography. One covers areas of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais from Sunday midday through late Monday; the other applies to Santa Catarina, Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul throughout Monday. Inmet said rainfall could reach 30–60 millimetres an hour, or 50–100 millimetres over a day, with wind gusts of 60–100 km/h. It advised people not to shelter beneath trees during gusts and urged motorists to avoid parking near transmission towers and advertising signs.
A wider forecast shares the concern over thunderstorms but places the sharpest emphasis on cumulative rain in the South. Paraná is described as the most worrying area, with more than 100 millimetres possible in 24 hours; between Monday and Wednesday, totals in parts of Paraná and Santa Catarina could reach 100–150 millimetres. Including weekend rain, parts of western Paraná could approach 250 millimetres.
That distinction matters because the forecast says the ground is already wet from earlier rainfall. It warns that the expected volumes raise the likelihood of flooding and landslides, particularly in mountainous areas, alongside possible hail and damaging winds.
Both accounts link the unsettled weather to a cold front and a cyclone affecting the South. But while Inmet focuses on practical safety measures during the formal warning window, the broader outlook underscores that the risk may persist as rain spreads across Paraná and Santa Catarina and affects parts of the Southeast, Central-West and North.
