Palmeiras’ 4-1 Derby Win Deepens Corinthians’ Relegation Fears
Palmeiras’ 4-1 victory over Corinthians in the 30th round produced sharply different consequences for the São Paulo rivals: one side strengthened its title challenge, while the other saw its survival concerns intensify.

For Palmeiras, the result underlined a performance defined by control and attacking efficiency. The home side moved to 63 points in second place, remaining behind leaders Flamengo after their win over Fluminense. Alexander Barboza opened the scoring from a set piece, before Giay struck twice; Matheus Bidu’s own goal further widened the gap. Palmeiras also had a second-half penalty saved by Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza.

The account of the match described Palmeiras as “much superior” in the first half and said their dominance continued after the interval. That interpretation is reflected in the scoreline, although Corinthians did find a late consolation through Gustavo Henrique from a corner.

For Corinthians, however, the result was less a single derby defeat than another marker of a broader crisis. The loss was reported as the club’s eighth straight defeat, leaving it 16th on 32 points and outside the relegation zone only because Internacional and Grêmio drew.

Souza offered the clearest expression of that concern after the match. “The only thing I have to say to the fans is to ask for forgiveness,” the goalkeeper said, adding that the team must keep its heads up and seek the results it needs in the remaining matches.

The teams now turn to contrasting immediate priorities. Palmeiras are scheduled to face Fluminense in the first leg of a Copa Libertadores semifinal, while Corinthians return to league action against Vitória, a match carrying greater weight in their effort to move clear of danger.
