Curitiba Hostage Rescue Ends With 13 Children Safe and the Invader Dead
A man armed with a knife entered the São Braz Municipal Early Childhood Education Center in Curitiba, Paraná, took 13 children hostage and was killed after police intervened, according to accounts across Brazil’s political media. All of the children were rescued, with no serious injuries reported.
Both right- and left-leaning coverage describes a high-risk operation involving Paraná Military Police and the BOPE special-operations unit. The reports say the man had spread fuel inside the classroom and threatened to start a fire, raising the stakes as negotiators sought the children’s release for more than two hours.
The difference is largely one of emphasis. A Brazil Right account foregrounds the police decision to enter after the man allegedly began assaulting students and threatened a child with a lighter and fuel. Colonel Alexandre Lopes Dias was quoted as saying officers chose to act “within BOPE technique to save lives.” That report also identifies the man and recounts alleged earlier incidents, while noting that the motive for the daycare attack had not been established.
Brazil Left coverage is more restrained on the suspect’s background and focuses instead on the sequence of containment, negotiation and aftermath. It notes that authorities isolated the area, deployed a police helicopter and evacuated children from nearby classrooms before the operation ended.
The accounts converge on the immediate response after the rescue. Curitiba’s city government mobilized education and psychology teams to assist children, relatives and staff. Some children were medically assessed, while municipal officials planned continued psychological support as the daycare prepared to reopen. The attacker’s motive remained unknown in the information cited by all sides.
