Moraes Reopens Bolsonaro Visits but Keeps a Campaign Wall Intact
Justice Alexandre de Moraes has restored Flávio Bolsonaro’s right to visit his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, after a 90-day suspension, but the ruling draws a firm distinction between family contact and political activity.
Moraes’s order permits visits under the previous hours, security arrangements and conditions, while barring any electoral purpose or the release of Jair Bolsonaro’s statements, including through third parties. “The resumption of Flávio Nantes Bolsonaro’s visitation regime” is authorized, the ruling says, but “political-electoral purpose and the disclosure of any manifestos or declarations” remain prohibited.
Accounts from the left emphasize the timing and political significance of the decision: it arrived 13 days before the presidential runoff between Flávio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. They note that the earlier suspension followed Flávio’s publication of a letter written by his father, which Moraes viewed as a breach of restrictions on Jair Bolsonaro’s public political communications. In that reading, the renewed access removes a personal barrier at a sensitive campaign moment, but does not authorize the former president to communicate with voters through his son.
Flávio and outlets on the right instead frame the episode as a personal and humanitarian matter. At a Mass in Brasília, Flávio said he was happy to be allowed to see his father again and called Jair Bolsonaro “a victim of an injustice.” Asked whether he would discuss his campaign during the visit, he said he would speak “in the capacity of a son,” arguing that anything else could be used against his father.
The legal limits nonetheless remain substantial. Moraes found no new developments requiring the suspension to be extended, but maintained the restrictions on electoral use, recordings and public transmission of Jair Bolsonaro’s views; visitors and vehicles remain subject to federal police searches. The result is a narrowly restored family visit, with the court seeking to keep campaign messaging outside the residence.
