France School Shooting Raises Questions as Motive Remains Unknown
A 14-year-old student opened fire at the Joseph-Lakanal school in Aubagne, near Marseille, on Monday, injuring the principal and a teacher before being stopped and detained. Authorities have yet to explain why the student brought a 12-gauge hunting shotgun to the school or identify a clear intended target.

The account published by Brazil Right emphasizes the broader setting: the attack occurred as students, teachers and unions were mobilising across France over public-school staffing, overcrowding and poor infrastructure. But it says there is no information tying the shooting to those protests, and that French authorities are still investigating the circumstances. The principal, 53, was reportedly wounded in the leg; neither victim was believed to be in life-threatening danger.

Brazil Left likewise says the attack was not believed to be connected to the demonstrations, but provides a more detailed reconstruction. Citing the local prefect, it reports that the student first shot the principal, wounding him in the thighs and lower back, then fired at a teacher, who was hit in the thigh. Further shots were fired in a corridor and toward a classroom, according to prosecutors.

The second account also highlights the response inside the school. President Emmanuel Macron praised the educational staff’s “cool-headedness and exemplary reaction,” saying it helped avert a worse outcome. A student told AFP that, after a fire alarm sounded, the alleged shooter said: “I only came for the teachers, not the students.”

Despite that reported statement, Marseille deputy prosecutor Audrey Jouaneton said investigators did not yet know the motive or whether adults had specifically been targeted. Both accounts therefore converge on the central unanswered question: how a student with no reported prior record came to carry out the attack, and why.
