Police seek more time as Bolsonaro film inquiry widens
Brazil’s Federal Police have asked Supreme Court Justice André Mendonça for a further 90 days to investigate the financing of Dark Horse, a film about former president Jair Bolsonaro. The inquiry, opened in July with support from the Prosecutor-General’s Office, examines suspected money laundering, corruption, foreign-exchange violations and other possible offenses involving former banker Daniel Vorcaro and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.
The request reflects investigators’ view that the case extends beyond the film’s initial funding. They are examining transfers connected to Vorcaro that reached the United States and whether any of the money helped cover expenses for Eduardo Bolsonaro there. The police are also pursuing a separate line of inquiry into suspected diversion of about 2 million reais in parliamentary amendments directed by Congressman Mario Frias to entities linked to Karina Ferreira da Gama, owner of the production company Go Up Entertainment.
The allegations bring together two distinct funding questions. In the Vorcaro strand, messages between the former banker and Flávio Bolsonaro prompted scrutiny of private backing for the project. Ferreira da Gama said Vorcaro financed more than 90% of the production, whose spending had reached $13 million by May. Flávio Bolsonaro initially denied asking Vorcaro for money before acknowledging their conversation; he has maintained that “the resources were private” and that there was no irregularity.
In the parliamentary-amendments strand, investigators identified what they describe as a timing overlap between the producer’s financial movements and transfers tied to Frias’s amendments, including a 645,400-real transfer to Go Up Entertainment. Frias, a screenwriter and executive producer on the film, denies that the amendments funded it. Flávio Bolsonaro likewise rejects any use of public funds and has accused Justice Flávio Dino, who oversees that separate investigation, of political interference in the election.
The defense has sought to consolidate the matters under Mendonça, arguing that he should oversee investigations related to the film. For now, Mendonça handles the alleged Vorcaro-linked transfers while Dino continues the inquiry into possible misuse of parliamentary amendments.
