Flávio Bolsonaro’s U.S. departure fuels clash over secrecy and election claims
Flávio Bolsonaro’s interview with The New York Times has sharpened two competing readings of his departure from Brazil: his own account of an independently arranged move under political pressure, and critics’ contention that the journey and his election allegations do not withstand scrutiny.
Bolsonaro said no government helped him reach the United States, describing the move as “all on my own.” Yet he declined to explain the route, saying, “How I got here, I’ll take to the grave.” The account cited U.S. officials who said a White House employee arranged the jet to Miami and that President Donald Trump authorized his entry; it also reported that a senior adviser to Argentina’s Javier Milei met him during a stopover.
The senator, who says he is innocent of money-laundering and corruption allegations and has not been charged, argues that remaining in Brazil would lead to imprisonment. “I already know the final outcome will be my arrest,” he said, while saying he intends to pursue opposition politics from the U.S. for now.
The divide is equally clear over the election. Bolsonaro called Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory “mathematically impossible” and said he had suspicions about vote counting, while conceding that no one could prove him definitively right or wrong. The opposing account notes that Brazil’s electoral court rejected the allegations and that figures in Bolsonaro’s own Liberal Party reported no evidence of fraud.
Supporters say the newspaper failed to engage with what they regard as unresolved evidence. Commentator Rodrigo Constantino wrote that Bolsonaro had presented “many strange data” about the result that the paper chose to ignore. Paulo Figueiredo, meanwhile, said allies expected unfavorable framing and had used the interview to restore Bolsonaro to international attention.
Critics describe that shift as a retreat from earlier promises of an explosive interview, arguing that the reporting instead exposed contradictions in the account of his exit and recycled unsubstantiated election theories.
