Conflicting death tolls cloud Krakow’s rare city-centre shooting
A shooting in central Krakow left pedestrians dead and others injured near the city’s Main Market Square, but early reports differed over the scale of the casualties as Polish authorities began their investigation.

The Brazil Right account said six people were killed and at least 15 injured after a 24-year-old Polish man drove toward the square and fired at people at random. It reported that four women and two men died, that two police officers were wounded, and that the suspect was taken to hospital after an exchange of fire. Police found further weapons and ammunition in his vehicle, the report said. Krakow police spokesperson Katarzyna Cislo said the man continued firing at officers even after being shot; police said he acted alone and that there was no continuing threat to the public.

The Brazil Left report, citing police and an AFP reporter at the scene, put the toll lower: five people killed and about 10 wounded. It described armed officers sealing off the busy tourist area, emergency vehicles arriving and bystanders taking shelter in historic-centre shops. A witness identified as Annette said she saw “a man shooting at people and walking through the square,” calling the episode “a tragedy for Krakow.”

Both accounts say the alleged attacker was shot by police and hospitalized, and both stress that a motive had not been established. They also present the violence as unusual in Poland, where mass shootings are rare. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said police were examining “the background and all circumstances” of what he called a tragic shooting attack, while President Karol Nawrocki said public safety was an “absolute priority.”

The differing casualty figures appear to reflect reporting at different stages of a fast-moving incident; neither account offers a final official tally.
