Norris Masters Rain-Soaked Interlagos Qualifying as Penalties Reshape the Grid
Lando Norris took pole position for the São Paulo Grand Prix after rain repeatedly interrupted qualifying at Interlagos, with both accounts portraying conditions as the decisive force behind an unusually volatile session.
The Brazil Right account emphasises the scale of the disruption: Q1 was halted for about 90 minutes as rain intensified, while crashes and further stoppages unsettled the rest of qualifying. It says Norris ultimately held off Mercedes driver George Russell as worsening weather stopped the final segment, describing the result as the Briton’s third consecutive pole at the Brazilian circuit.
The Brazil Left account reaches the same conclusion but provides a more granular picture of how Norris secured it. It reports that he set a 1:27.470 in Q3, ahead of Russell’s 1:27.674, shortly before the rain became too strong for another meaningful attempt. “Norris was the only one to beat Russell,” it says of the decisive final runs.
Where the first account foregrounds five power-unit penalties as a factor that could “significantly” alter the starting order, the second spells out their effects. Russell’s five-place drop moves Kimi Antonelli into second on the grid, while Charles Leclerc’s 10-place penalty pushes him to 14th. It also highlights Liam Lawson’s qualifying performance and elevated starts for Nico Hülkenberg and Isack Hadjar.
Both reports note difficult outings for Brazilian-linked drivers Gabriel Bortoleto and Rafael Câmara in the wet. Bortoleto’s early incident left him at the back of Q1, while Câmara reached Q2 before crashing. The Left account nevertheless casts Câmara’s progress to the second session as a notable achievement, even as the weather and penalties transformed the final order behind Norris.
