Bell 0.2.0

Bell 0.2.0

Bell is an Android Nostr client for following replies and quotes across several accounts, with your keys held in Amber. Version 0.2.0 refines the timeline and controls. It also adds developer logging.

Other people’s activity, in order

The shared timeline collects replies and quotes around your connected accounts in chronological order, including recursive quote discussion. Bell keeps following a thread when later posts skip your account’s tag. The timeline shows other people’s posts. Replies written by your connected accounts appear as context in the conversation tree. An event that reaches several of your accounts appears once, labeled with each of them.

Compact controls

Navigation and actions now use compact icons. Each icon has a 48dp touch target and an accessible label with a tooltip. Colors are pure black with a warm amber (#FFBF00) accent. The sender’s avatar sits beside reply and react. Tap it to switch between signed-in accounts. A pending action keeps its original sender.

Names and pictures

Profile names and pictures are now cached on the device, so they reload far less often. If a profile has no name, Bell uses your local account name or a generic label. Placeholder avatars show an initial or an account icon. The following marker reflects the latest follow lists of your connected accounts. Bell sizes the image cache at startup toward a soft total storage target. It protects the database, so overall use can go past that target.

Loading in bounded batches

Bell opens with a bounded snapshot of recent activity and catches up automatically after a reconnect. Earlier history loads in bounded batches when you drag to the bottom or tap the earlier button. Relays determine coverage, so threads mark what is missing or still loading.

Developer logging

A new setting, off by default, sends Bell’s structural diagnostics to Android’s Logcat: counts, timings, request IDs, cache sources and error categories. These records leave out keys and signing payloads, along with all event and profile content. Android and library logs follow their own rules.
