Bell 0.4.0
Bell 0.4.0
Bell 0.4.0 adds Data Saver and public user mutes, with changes to reactions, account controls and cached startup.
Data Saver on metered networks. Bell now turns on Data Saver by default when you’re on a metered connection. Media that is already cached stays available. Post images that aren’t cached show as tap-to-load. On metered connections, avatars and custom emoji load automatically only from the cache.
Mutes. Bell now applies your public NIP-51 mute list for each account. Posts from muted users are collapsed, and you can reveal them if you choose. Muted users also no longer trigger alerts in any thread. Collapsed posts keep their place in the conversation, so the replies around them still read in order. Private mutes are not part of this release.
Emoji. Tapping the emoji button shows six favorites and an All emojis option. A long press lets you edit the recommendations. Choosing a favorite sends it with one tap.
Accounts and layout. The account dropdown is now in the top left and includes Add another account. The Bell title is centered, and the duplicate account control in the top right has been removed. The mark-read check sits at the far right. When you open a notification, it stays unread and the reply you selected is highlighted. The reply icon is now curved, and the send icon hasn’t changed. The Enable notifications prompt is also easier to find.
Relays and loading. Bell shares its connections more evenly across relays and handles reconnects and backoff better. Per-account filters have also been improved. Metadata fetches are now limited in size. At startup, Bell reads a limited first page from its local cache, along with profiles and your mute settings, before it draws the first timeline. When you open a conversation, Bell loads it from local storage before drawing it. A bulk membership query cuts down on repeated database work.
Security. Bell is now stricter about which relay events it accepts. It checks event fields more closely and limits media URLs and sizes. It also handles unclear responses from signers more carefully.
