Default Date Ranges in Data Studio: Choosing What Readers See First

How I choose the default date range in Data Studio reports.

The default date range is a small setting that shapes how every Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio) report is read. I’m Harsh Khubchandani, an independent Data Studio consultant in New Delhi, and I choose it on purpose for each report.

Match the meeting

If a report is reviewed every Monday, the default should be last week. If it supports a monthly business review, it should be last complete month. The first view people see should answer the question of that meeting without anyone touching a control.

Avoid “today” in most reports

Ranges that include today show partial data and depend on when the sources last refreshed. I usually end ranges at yesterday.

Use auto ranges, not fixed dates

A fixed range set during the build quietly goes stale. I use the automatic options, such as last 28 days or last month, so the report stays current without edits.

Override only where needed

Some charts, like a twelve-month trend, need their own range regardless of the page control. I set those at chart level and label them clearly so readers know why they differ.

If your report opens on the wrong dates, I offer a free 30-minute review. Details at datastudioconsultant.com.
