Hackathon Developer Interview 3 : Zapminder and the Future of Incentivized Habit Tracking

One of the standout projects at the YakiHonne Agentic MiniApps Hackathon was Zapminder , a solo-built app by Indian Bitcoin developer Sharma (nostr:@ln_predator) that merges personal growth with decentralized incentives.

Zapminder gamifies habit-building on Nostr by rewarding users with Bitcoin for consistent progress. In this interview, Sharma shares the inspiration, technical choices, and why he sees Nostr as a key platform for Bitcoin-native consumer apps.

🌱 The Motivation: Give Value to Consistency

The idea behind Zapminder stemmed from Sharma’s frustration with traditional social platforms. He noticed how flooded they are with content “noise,” yet rarely offer meaningful feedback or incentives for users who are genuinely trying to improve themselves.

“Most platforms don’t reward actual progress. With Nostr, I could integrate habit-building with Bitcoin staking — turning effort into value.”

Zapminder allows users to set personal goals (like learning or fitness), post daily updates on Nostr, and receive SATs as rewards once those posts are verified — either through AI or peer review. It’s a way of aligning financial rewards with behavioral consistency.

⚙️ The Stack: Built for Focus and Flow

To build Zapminder, Sharma chose a lean but powerful stack:

  • React for the front-end user interface
  • Yakihonne Smart Widget SDK for seamless integration with Nostr — including identity, posting, payments, and wallet connection
  • Node.js + Lightning Network for backend logic and SATs distribution

“The SDK was incredible. It took care of so much, which allowed me to focus purely on product logic rather than infrastructure.”

Although the current version uses a custodial Lightning node for payments, Sharma is working on a transition toward a trustless escrow-based model to better align with the ethos of decentralization.

🧗‍♂️ The Biggest Challenge: Making Payments Feel Invisible

Sharma’s top challenge? Creating a frictionless reward system.

He wanted users to be able to stake and receive SATs with just a few clicks — without needing to understand NWC credentials, Lightning extensions, or complex setup steps.

“The widget should just work. No technical hurdles. No distractions. Just a smooth UX that gets out of the way and lets the user focus on their goals.”

To achieve this, Sharma spent significant effort abstracting the payment flow into a seamless interaction. The result is a product that feels intuitive despite the complex backend.

🧠 Lessons Learned: Clarity Before Code

As a seasoned developer, Sharma emphasized the importance of planning before diving into code — especially for those new to hackathons.

“Before touching the IDE, ask yourself three things: What exactly are you building? What value does it create? Who benefits from it?”

Too often, he observed, developers rush to build without fully thinking through their use case — resulting in projects that lack direction or sustainability. Sharma’s approach was different: he prioritized clarity, then execution.

🌄 Seeing Nostr’s Untapped Potential

Zapminder was Sharma’s first major experience building on the Nostr protocol — and it proved eye-opening.

“Nostr + Bitcoin is an untapped goldmine for consumer apps. And Yakihonne’s SDK makes that potential more accessible than ever.”

He believes we’re still in the very early days of this ecosystem and sees enormous opportunity for developers who can bridge behavioral science with decentralized technology.

🔮 What’s Next: Trustless Rewards and Open Infrastructure

Looking ahead, Sharma plans to take Zapminder to the next level by advancing its decentralization:

  • Introducing non-custodial SATs escrow systems
  • Enabling transparent auditing through Bitcoin Layer 1
  • Partnering with other builders in the Nostr ecosystem

“With version 1, Zapminder will finally unlock Bitcoin’s potential as a native incentive engine. The feedback has been great — now it’s time to build.”

✅ Final Thoughts: Tools That Empower Users

Zapminder shows what’s possible when agentic MiniApps are designed to reward users not just for their attention, but for their action. It’s a clear example of how decentralized technologies can promote ownership, autonomy, and positive behavior.

As Sharma continues to iterate, his work reminds us that Bitcoin isn’t just money — it’s a tool for changing how we build habits, how we interact, and how we grow.

“When discipline becomes rewarding, everything changes.”
