A separate trading wallet for pump.fun: the cheapest safety upgrade
- The idea: a “hot” wallet that can only lose what’s in it
- Setting it up
- Habits that keep it working
- What this doesn’t solve
Disclosure: I run PumpFunReferralCode.vip, an independent guide to the pump.fun invite code SAVE100. The site uses a referral link, so I may benefit if you sign up through it. Not affiliated with pump.fun. Not financial advice.
The simplest safety upgrade for anyone trading memecoins is not a tool or a bot. It’s a second wallet. Here is the setup I recommend to friends before they ever connect anything to pump.fun or any other launchpad.
The idea: a “hot” wallet that can only lose what’s in it
Keep two Solana wallets:
- Vault wallet: where your savings live. It never connects to new sites, never signs anything from a link someone sent you, and ideally lives on a hardware wallet.
- Trading wallet: a separate address you use for pump.fun and other memecoin sites. You top it up with only the amount you are prepared to lose.
If the trading wallet ever signs a malicious transaction or a drainer gets hold of it, the damage stops at whatever was in that wallet that day.
Setting it up
- Create a new account in your wallet app (most Solana wallets let you add several accounts) or use a separate wallet app. Give it an obvious name like “trading”.
- Write down the recovery phrase offline. Never type it into a website, a form, a “support” chat or a DM. No real platform will ask for it.
- Send a fixed budget from your vault to the trading wallet. Decide the amount before you look at any charts.
- When you take profits, send them back to the vault. Don’t let gains pile up in the hot wallet.
Habits that keep it working
- Type the domain yourself. Go to
pump.funfrom your own bookmark. Invite links are fine as long as they stay on that exact domain (the SAVE100 one ishttps://pump.fun/join/SAVE100). - Read every signature request. A buy should look like a buy. If a popup asks for broad permissions, wants you to “verify” your wallet for an airdrop, or you simply don’t understand it, reject it.
- Disconnect sites you no longer use from the wallet’s connected-apps list.
- Ignore unsolicited tokens and NFTs that show up in your wallet. Many carry links to drainer sites; interacting with them is how people get caught.
- One wallet per risk level. If you also try brand-new, unknown dapps, give them their own throwaway address too.
What this doesn’t solve
A separate wallet limits how much you can lose to a scam. It does nothing about losing money on a coin that simply goes to zero, which is what happens to most memecoins. For that side of the risk I keep a list of rug pull warning signs and a broader page asking is pump.fun safe?. If you’re brand new, start with what pump.fun is and how it works.
Risk warning: memecoins are highly speculative and volatile. Only use money you can afford to lose.
