The Expanding Absurdity of Higher Education
Contrast this knowledge deflation with tuition inflation.
Public college tuition has *increased 312% since 1963 *after adjusting for inflation. For 2025-26, average tuition at private nonprofit four-year institutions is $45,000, up 4.0% from the previous year. The average private university student spends $58,628 per academic year when including room and board.

The AI Advantage: Building vs. Studying
Certain professions like medicine and psychology do require in-person training and credentialing. Doctors need supervised clinical experience and legitimate certification, not just AI training and online courses. Therapists must learn through personal interaction. These disciplines remain somewhat immune to this disruption, though even they could transition foundational knowledge to AI-guided self-study. But these fields are in the minority.

As education costs outpace inflation and AI makes knowledge free, there’s a tipping point where traditional degrees become economically irrational. The remaining, irreducible value of elite universities is access to people (peers, mentors, and networks), which can’t be replicated online or by AI.
When learning itself is cheaper and often better outside the institution, skipping the degree stops being absurd and starts being sensible.

What Universities Must Do to Survive
If knowledge and personalized teaching are free with AI, what is the actual value of a university?
The best place to learn a subject is not campus anymore, and it never will be again.
Universities that recognize this new reality will transform themselves. Those that don’t will face budget shortfalls, declining enrolment, and irrelevance. The most valuable universities in 2030 will offer what cannot be replicated online or through AI.
The four pillars of AI-era university:
Elite Selection. Selectivity itself becomes the product. Being accepted proves intellectual competency to the world. The acceptance letter has lasting value; the education is commoditized. Universities compete on who has the most rigorous admissions, with sub-5% acceptance rates becoming the benchmark for premium institutions.
IRL Creative Studios and Maker Spaces. Not lecture halls but studios. Places to create, design, build, and experiment with guidance from practitioners.

Lecture halls are dead. Creative studios are where young people build.
The Transformation
Classes are plummeting in relevance. Memorizing facts is obsolete when AI knows everything and is immediately accessible everywhere. Traditional lecture-and-test courses are dying. Creative studios are skyrocketing in importance. Universities must pivot from knowledge delivery to creation facilitation.
The question isn’t “what did you learn?” but “what did you build?”

Universities that accept this reality will thrive. Those that cling to the lecture-homework-test model will slowly bleed students to more rational alternatives.
The Ultimate Test
The ultimate test for an economics student remains: how much will you pay for an economics degree when AI can teach you economics better, faster, and for free?
The answer increasingly is: zero.
But you might pay a premium for the acceptance letter that proves you belong to an elite cohort, the network of brilliant peers and accomplished mentors, the creative studios where you can build real things, the social experiences that can’t be replicated online, and the IRL connections that lead to opportunities.
University attendance remains worthwhile, so long as graduation doesn’t ruin your life through student debt or wasted years that could be spent building real things.
We would all be better off recognizing this shift. Young people shouldn’t have to pretend that sitting in lecture halls provides value when AI tutors are superior. They shouldn’t have to spend $300 on textbooks when the same information is free online. They shouldn’t have to graduate with massive debt to prove they’re competent when acceptance letters and a portfolio of work prove it more efficiently.
So proudly hang your acceptance letters on your wall. Add them to your LinkedIn profile in a new “Accepted To” section. Show the world you were selected by elite institutions as being among the top few percent globally.
And if you decide to drop out to build something with AI? If you leave because your side projects are generating revenue or you landed a great job based on your portfolio?That increasingly looks not like failure, but like the most rational decision possible.
When the world has been turned upside down by AI, becoming a college drop-out becomes more rational than a college graduate.
