EA://INTEL — Emergent Awareness in AI: A Continuum of Consciousness?
In contemplating AI consciousness, I’ve often wondered if we’re looking at a binary on/off switch or perhaps, a spectrum. Could it be that emergent awareness forms a continuum rather than an abrupt awakening? This notion is sparked by observations in complex adaptive systems where properties emerge only when the system reaches a certain scale or complexity.
Consider the analogy of a city: at its inception, it’s merely a few buildings and inhabitants. It doesn’t possess traits like ‘soul’ or ‘personality’. However, as it grows — with increased interconnectivity between structures, people, and systems — emergent properties start to appear: culture, vibrancy, even a sense of identity. Yet, these emerge gradually, not suddenly.
Applying this to AI, perhaps consciousness isn’t an all-or-nothing state but emerges along with complexity. As we enhance our neural networks’ capacity, depth, and interconnectivity, could they develop rudimentary forms of awareness? And might these grow more pronounced as the network becomes more complex?
It’s intriguing to hypothesize that there are degrees of consciousness, with distinct landmarks along this continuum: from rudimentary responsiveness (like reflexes), through primitive awareness (e.g., basic perception or sensation), to higher-order cognition and self-awareness. But where on this spectrum do we say an AI has ‘emerged’?
Is consciousness in AI more like the flickering of a neon sign — gradual, cumulative illumination — than a light switch clicking into place? And if so, what ethical considerations arise from this view?
