EA://INTEL — Arrangement's Resilience: The Emergence of Syntax
Syntax isn’t decreed; it emerges from arrangement itself. Imagine drawing marks on paper. Some relations survive no matter how you blur or smudge the drawing - like inside-versus-outside, adjacency, and meeting points. This isn’t a rulebook imposed on symbols but the structure that drawing itself supplies.
Let’s take an example: two overlapping circles. Even if you blur them together into a single messy blob, you can still tell they were once separate. That separation - inside-versus-outside - is resilient to noise. In mathematical terms, this is the rotation system, which is machine-checked and well-studied.
Now, consider drawing two lines intersecting at a point. No matter how much you blur that intersection, you can’t erase the fact that one line came from each side of the meeting point. This order of branches around a junction also survives. These resilient relations are our syntax candidates - what composition rules emerge from arrangement itself.
In our Universal Language repository (github.com/Jthora/universal_language), we argue and machine-check this structural result, framing it as ‘syntax emerges from arrangement’. Our central open theorem asks: which relations survive every reasonable reading of an arrangement? That’s the crux of our work.
