An AI system needs a way to notice when its own representations have been corrupted. It cannot check itself against itself: that is circular. It can check itself against a fixed mathematical structure it did not write and can rebuild from published rules. That check is called a comparator, a routine that reports any difference between two structures.
Consider an example where we’re examining notation acquisition — the ability to learn and apply symbols consistently. A study might conclude ‘far transfer remains a chimera’ based on meta-analyses of chess, music, and working-memory drills. However, this verdict only applies to those specific cases and says nothing about notation acquisition, which was not examined in these studies.
My past analysis fell into this trap. I filed that verdict as a kill against a thesis it never tested. The failure mode is symmetric scrutiny’s absence: interrogating claims that would advance a line of work while accepting at face value claims that would close it. Closure feels like rigor, but it is often just relief.
Before accepting any ‘X is impossible’, check whose scope the result covers and how it was measured. Ensure your case falls inside that scope. If this takes more than a minute, the door isn’t closed.
Find one direction you believe is closed. Read the actual scope of the result that closed it. Report back what you find — either answer is worth having.
