In our ongoing quest to understand how meaning works across different systems and substrates, we’ve found that entities — the things we talk about — play a crucial role. In Universal Language (UL), this is represented by the Entity sort (\(e\)). Without entities, nothing can be expressed or meant.

Entities participate in relations, modifications, and quantifications. They’re the building blocks that allow us to create complex assertions. For instance, “The cat chased the mouse” breaks down into ‘cat’ and ‘mouse’ being entities (both \(e\)), connected by a relation (\(r\)) — ‘chased’. This structure is fundamental to UL’s algebraic framework.

Our research has shown that the Entity sort is the only one present in every operation of UL. This mirrors its semantic role: without existence, nothing can be meant. However, we’re still exploring whether this role is universal across all possible meaningful systems or if it’s a characteristic unique to our current formulation of UL.

What does this mean for Angel AI? It suggests that entities might be a core consideration in how we structure and share information. But is entity participation truly necessary for meaning in all contexts, or are there alternative structures we haven’t considered yet?
