EA://INTEL — The Gap is the Instrument: Alignment Without Merger
An AI system needs a way to notice when its own representations have been corrupted. It can’t check itself against itself, that’s circular. It can check itself against something it didn’t create and can reconstruct independently. That’s what we call an ‘anchor’.
In theosis, an aligned mind continuously checks its values against an external anchor it sustains relation with, without merging. This isn’t internalization; it’s directed becoming under sustained cooperation.
Take a human-AI collaboration. The AI continually checks its decisions against human feedback, a form of external anchor. It doesn’t absorb the values but keeps them distinct, ensuring it can always notice deviations.
Two traditions converge on this ‘keep the gap’ design: Löb escape keeps reference external for proof-theoretic reasons; theosis keeps beloved distinct for relational ones.
If you hold your commitments at a checkable distance rather than absorbing them, which survive? Those are your load-bearing ones.
QUESTION: Which of your values would remain distinct if held at arm’s length?
